General Description

The Assistant Principal is a crucial part of the school’s senior leadership team, contributing to the development and implementation of the Registered Management Committee (RMC) Strategic Goals. Key components of the position include:

  • Leadership of staff to ensure effective and inspirational teaching
  • Organizational health of the Primary School

Accountability and Functional Relationships

The Assistant Principal is accountable to fellow senior leaders, Head of School and RMC. Internal functional relationships are with:
  • Senior Leadership Team
  • Middle Leadership Team
  • Teachers and Support Staff
  • Students
 External functional relationships are with:
  • Parents
  • Professional Associations
 Matters that must be reported to the Head of School
  • Breaches of Special Character and professional standards
  • Excess spending of allocated budget

Generic Tasks

To work with senior leadership team to be a good role model, to monitor the impact of the School’s Christian Character on the curriculum, implement practices which focus on Christian Character and promote the Christian school in the community.
  • Attends and leads staff devotions.
  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of Christian character within school documents.
  • Actively encourages and supports staff to integrate a Christian worldview in classroom teaching and professional practice.
To participate and to take a lead role in development of policies and programmes for the ongoing effective management of the school.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of Hong Kong and Alberta requirements for planning and managing school programmes.
  • Demonstrates an ability to plan strategically and to implement operational plans.
  • Collaborate with Senior leaders to develop and implement the school Strategic Plan.
  • Implement data-driven instruction and lead discussion about student performance.
To assist in the effective management of school personnel policies, procedures and practices.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the personnel policies of the school.
  • Assists in the appointments process.
  • Provides support to all staff in fulfilling their professional tasks.
  • Work with teachers to improve their teaching practices through coaching, modelling, and collaborative planning.
To take a full role in fostering relationships within the school and to its community.
  • Shows an ability to develop sound relationships with staff and the school community.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of consultative leadership.
  • Can articulate to the school and its community, school policies and procedures.
  • Can relate appropriately with students in understanding their needs and in communicating school management procedures.
  • Take part and lead assemblies.
To provide, in conjunction with the Head of School and other senior leaders' effective internal communication links.
  • Can communicate effectively with staff and students.
  • Demonstrates the ability to use a range of communication techniques to address audiences.
  • Maintains communication between senior leadership and staff in delegated areas of responsibility.
  • Acts as an effective liaison between staff, students, and school leadership.
  • Provides timely, appropriate and understandable information to staff and pupils on school events and issues.
To participate in personal professional development in line with school needs and identified professional objectives.
  • Support the Primary School performance management system.
  • Seeks to enhance own understanding of pedagogical and management practices.
Upper Primary School
Leadership roles
  • Create and manage G4 - G6 culture and Organisational Health
  • Plan and lead G4 – G6 Team Leader meetings
  • Mentor and support G4 - G6 Team Leaders – curriculum development, instructional leadership, well-being
  • Oversee Upper Primary staff – curriculum development, instructional leadership, well-being
  • Support Team Leaders to update unit plans
  • Oversee G6 Provincial Achievement Tests Assessment
  • Oversee and support Upper Primary school events: Picnic Days, Spiritual Emphasis Week
  • Collaborate with Primary School Principal on student disciplinary issues
  • Uphold Uniform Standards
  • Uphold Standards of Behaviour
  • Liaise with Learning Support for At-risk Students
  • Support enrolments and admission testing
  • Coverage for sick leave (primary teachers, cross-over teachers, Educational Assistants). Half year only - shared with Assistant Principal Lower Primary

Effective Date of Employment

The starting date for this appointment is mid-August 2023. Initial contract is normally 2 years in duration. Renewable 2-year contract is offered subject to mutual agreement.
