General Description

The Principal (High School) is a crucial part of the School’s senior leadership team, contributing to the development and implementation of the Registered Management Committee (RMC) Strategic Goals. Key components of the position include:

  • Leadership of staff to ensure effective and inspirational teaching.
 Accountability and Functional RelationshipsThe Principal (High School) will be accountable to fellow senior leaders, Head of School and RMC. Internal functional relationships are with:
  • Senior Leadership Team
  • Middle Leadership Team
  • Student Services Team
  • Teachers and Support Staff
  • Students
 External functional relationships are with:
  • Parents and Guardians
  • Professional Associations
  • Other Educational Organisations
  • KTAC
 Matters that must be reported to the Head of School

Responsibilities

TaskPerformance Indicators
To work with senior leadership team to be a good role model, to monitor the impact of the School’s Special Character on the curriculum, monitor staff involvement in Christian education programmes, implement school development features which focus on the Special Character and promote the Christian school in the wider community. To provide, in conjunction with the Head of School and other senior leaders appropriate professional leadership which is supportive of general policy direction.
  • Takes part and leads staff devotions.
  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of special character statements within the school’s foundational documents.
  • Takes opportunities to integrate the Christian worldview with classroom teaching and other professional practice.
  • Actively encourages and supports other staff in the above.
  • Supports the Head of School and RMC in developing policy to enhance the Special Character of the school.
  • Undertakes any tasks delegated by the Head of School to promote Christian education in the local community and beyond.
To participate and to take a lead role in development of policies and programmes for the ongoing effective management of the school.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of Hong Kong and Alberta requirements for planning and managing school programmes.
  • Demonstrates an ability to plan strategically and to implement operational plans.
  • Collaborate with Senior leaders to develop and carry on school wide SMART plan.
  • Understands and appreciates the International Education Hong Kong context.
  • Monitor student achievement results (quarterly analysis)
  • Implement data-driven instruction and lead discussion about student performance.
To assist in the effective management of school personnel policies, procedures and practices including the school’s performance management system.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the personnel policies of the school.
  • Assists in the appointments process.
  • Takes a role in implementing the performance management system in the school.
  • Provides support to all staff in fulfilling their professional tasks.
  • Work with teachers to improve their teaching practices through coaching, modelling, and collaborative planning.
To take a full role in fostering and developing effective and supportive relationships both within the school and to its community. 
  • Shows an ability to develop sound relationships with staff and with the school community.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of consultative leadership.
  • Is able to relate appropriately with students in understanding their needs and in communicating school management procedures.
  • Is able to articulate to the school and its community, policies and procedures relating to the school.
  • Contribute to School Newsletter

  • Oversee the House System

  • Work with the School Council
To provide, in conjunction with the Head of School and other senior leaders effective internal communication links.
  • Is able to communicate effectively with staff and students.
  • Maintains communication between senior leadership and staff in delegated areas of responsibility.
  • Acts as an effective liaison between staff, students and school leadership.
  • Provides appropriate and understandable information to staff and pupils on school events and issues.
  • Demonstrates the ability to use a range of communication techniques to address audiences.
To effectively manage, within delegated limits, financial and asset resources to support the teaching and learning programmes.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the need to manage school assets appropriately and effectively.
  • In line with delegated authority implements school policies relating to financial and asset management.
To participate, as appropriate in personal professional development in line with school development needs and identified professional objectives.
  • Participate in performance management system within the school as it relates to personal performance.
  • Seeks to enhance own understanding of pedagogical and management practices.
  • Takes professional development opportunities to support and enhance own personal development
  • Lead professional development for the high school
Specific High School leadership roles
  • Plan and lead high school TL meetings
  • Work with Student Ministry and be active in spiritual life planning (worship and chapels, Camp and Spiritual Emphasis Days, Student Fellowship)
  • Oversee the PACT program
  • Plan the curriculum pathways and course offerings
  • Oversee the onboarding and mentoring of new teachers
  • Mentor team leaders
  • Direct oversight of the IB coordinator and Programme
  • Delegate TLs to monitor team members' growth plan and unit plan updates
  • Oversee and support high school events, ECAs, and student clubs: camp, Discovery Days, student leadership, Lions Athletics, etc.
  • Support the Student Representative Council and develop wider student leadership
  • Rosters: Assembly, Chapel, Staff meetings
  • EOTC approval for local trips
  • Awards Ceremonies and graduation
  • Alberta Education requirements
  • Alberta Education Provincial Assessments: PATs and Diplomas
  • Oversee modified classes and curriculum, including support for online learning
  • English Language Learning and learning support systems across the high school
  • Oversee the Pastoral Deans, the discipline system and policies, and be directly involved at Level 3 discipline
  • High School Enrolments and Admissions testing
Day to Day Leadership
  • Morning gate greeting and school walk-throughs
  • Be present in the classroom and regularly communicate with teachers on pedagogy and practice
  • Maintain Uniform Standards
  • Monitor and follow up on student punctuality and attendance
  • Maintain Standards of Behaviour
  • Liaise with Learning Support for At-risk Student Register and actively collaborate with the Learning Services team
  • Support enrolments and admission testing
  • Member of Academic Committee
Other ad-hoc duties due to School operations needs
  • Any ad-hoc duties due to operations needs as required and assigned
  • Any other duties / occasions that requiring emergency attention

Effective Date of Employment

Initial contract is normally 3 years in duration.
