Alberta Curriculum & Advanced Placement Courses

ALBERTA CURRICULUM

CAIS offers the renowned Alberta curriculum, and is accredited to provide studies leading to the High School Diploma qualification of Alberta Education, Canada. Alberta Education has earned the accolades of universities throughout the world due to the quality of students produced from its provincial and international schools. An international assessment, the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) assesses 15-year-old students’ reading, mathematics, and science literacy every three years. In 2018, 600,000 students representing about 32 million 15-years-olds in the schools of the 78 participating countries and economies including Hong Kong sat the 2-hour PISA test.

Overall PISA rankings reflect where each of the participating countries stands in terms of the students’ skills in the above three domains. Hong Kong ranks 4th worldwide with an average score of 530.7, followed by other popular study destinations amongst Hong Kong parents, including Canada (8th) with a score of 516.7,  UK (13th) with a score of 503.7 and Australia (21st) with a score of 499.0. Canada is the only English speaking country among the top 10 in the world.

The Accountability Pillar

Diploma & Credits Requirements

Students can begin earning credits in the Alberta Diploma Program in Grade 10. Upon successful completion of 100 credits, with at least twenty Level 30 credits, students will be awarded an Alberta High School Diploma.  For more information about Alberta Education’s Diploma Exams, you may visit the official website.

The Advanced Placement®(AP®) program is a cooperative educational endeavor between secondary schools, colleges and universities. The AP® program supplements Alberta courses for Grades 11-12 students seeking further academic challenge. Successful AP® Exam completion positions them to qualify for credit transfer or advanced placement at many universities. Selected students may have the opportunity to write Advanced Placement® exams in May each year whether they have taken the instruction provided by the School or not. AP® Scholar Awards

The AP® Scholar Awards are presented to students demonstrating college-level achievement through AP® courses and exams. A certificate is presented and acknowledged on a score report sent directly to universities. Awards include:

  • AP® Scholar: For scores of at least 3 on 3 or more AP® Exams
  • AP® Scholar with Honors: For average scores of at least 25 on all AP® Exams taken,  and scores  of 3 or higher on 4 or more of these
  • AP® Scholar with Distinction: For average scores of at least 3.5 on all AP® Exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on 5 or more exams
