Primary

The early years of learning are an exciting time of growth in all areas of development: academic, social, physical, emotional and spiritual. Our holistic approach to education is evident in the way we integrate all of these aspects within a safe learning environment where the needs of students are our paramount focus.

At each grade level, CAIS students explore their creative side. In art classes, students learn to draw, paint, sculpt and get to know the techniques of diverse artists and styles. In music classes, students sing and practice instruments. They discover the sounds of different musicians, composers and genres. The arts may be integrated with other subject areas in order to make learning meaningful for the students, creating links and reinforcing principles and concepts through their applications.

All of our Primary classes are taught by experienced and caring homeroom teachers. They are assisted by a wide range of specialists, support teachers, and educational assistants.

Our Primary section consists of three main groups of classes:

We seek to instill a solid foundation of God's love in children's exciting and changing world. Young ones are naturally curious and eager to learn, therefore we provide learning experiences that will nurture a thirst for knowledge and godliness. We place great importance on instilling moral values and we believe in the holistic development of each unique child. Through interactions, activities and purposeful play, children explore and experiment with their environment to add to their knowledge and learn new skills.

Our enthusiastic and talented team recognizes that parents are the child's first teachers and warmly welcome parental participation. The more involved you are in your child's learning, the greater success they will have in school. We look forward to collaborating with you to help your child achieve their God-given potential!

The lower primary years are crucial and foundational to success in future learning.  Our primary teachers are well aware of the importance of the developmental stages during this time and design learning activities specifically targeted to meet the needs of this group – spiritually, emotionally, physically, and intellectually.

Our energetic, Lower Primary teaching team has created a welcoming and safe environment for our young learners in their homeroom classes. In addition, our school is designed to facilitate Small Learning Communities, with group learning zones located near classrooms in the primary wing to immerse students in a nurturing, interactive learning environment. Along with our strong teacher-student ratio, we are able to cater to the specific interests and needs of students on an individual basis, giving them the inspiration and instruction needed to reach their potential across a full spectrum of subjects.

G1, G2 and G3 students will take part in a number of Alberta mandated assessments. The first two are Numeracy and Literacy Screening Assessments, given to G1, G2 & G3 students, to determine student numeracy and literacy levels and to help identify at-risk students. These are very short, 1-on-1 assessments administered by the class teacher, and for which students do not need to study. Next, the “Student Learning Assessments”, or “SLAs”, are test administered before the end of October to gauge how well G3 students have learned the learning outcomes for the G2 Alberta program of studies.

A highlight of the Upper Primary experience is the overnight camps. Staying overnight ranges from 1-2 nights depending on grade level. The focus for these exciting camps is to foster character building and teamwork skills.

STEAM Night (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) is another first at Upper Primary. Students get a glimpse into the life of a scientist or engineer! They experiment, display and present their scientific discoveries to parents and students during this event.
